The former boyband star told Goss.ie that he needs to prove himself on 2FM.
He played to hundreds and thousands of fans all over the world, but Nicky Byrne has said being on radio is more pressure.
The 2FM host who presents The Nicky Byrne Show admitted that he is more anxious about being on the airwaves.
“There is probably more pressure (then being in Westlife). When you leave Westlife you’re one of four.
Nicky Byrne says that he is “very excited” about his new 2fm weekday show although he also finds the whole thing very “daunting”.
2fm presenter Ryan Tubridy rang the former Westlife star this morning to congratulate him, saying: “You’re the new boy in town. Welcome aboard!”
Byrne (35) said he was looking forward to his new 11am weekday show, adding: “Obviously I’ve had a great relationship with all of you in there [in 2fm] through Westlife and since that ended. It’s very daunting for me, [but] I’m really, really looking forward to it. I’m very excited.
“I’m delighted and to be honest with you Ryan, it was the draw of a free RTÉ Guide every week that pushed me over the line to be honest with you!”
He added: “Joking aside, I’ve always, as a kid growing up, listened to radio stations and looked at TV presenters and always fancied that line of work.
“Obviously with Westlife when that kicked off it all went bananas, it was so busy and then through Westlife, there’s been a lot of radio work around the world then as guest and on TV.
“It does feel natural to want to do that and to start it. But I never thought I would manage to secure, at my age, to get a live show five days a week. Huge responsibility and a great opportunity.”
Byrne will present a weekday show from 11am to 1pm on RTÉ 2fm.
Former Westlife member Nicky Byrne has joined 2fm’s new line-up and will present a new 11am show on weekday mornings.
The 35-year-old Dubliner previously presented 2fm’s Celebrity Sunday in 2010 and filled in for Ryan Tubridy in May of last year.
Commenting on his new role, Byrne said today: “Dan Healy [head of 2fm] has amazing plans and vision for the station moving forward and it is very exciting for me to be part of those plans.
“There is a real belief from within about where the station can go – the thought of being on air Monday to Friday is daunting but very, very exciting. It is a massive opportunity for me, one in which I hope I can deliver on forming a successful relationship with the station for many years to come.
“Now it’s time to start planning, developing and presenting my new show and I really can’t wait to get chatting to our listeners nationwide daily.”
Byrne will be joined by another new voice to day time radio on 2fm who will be announced in the coming days. This is the second announcement in the new 2fm shake up. Bernard O’Shea, Keith Walsh and Jennifer Maguire were revealed last week as the new 2fm breakfast presenters.
Since Westlife’s split, Byrne has began a TV presenting career and has most recently presented RTÉ’s The Hit and last year took part in BBC series Strictly Come Dancing and RTÉ Two’s Football’s Next Star.
He is married to Georgina Ahern, the eldest daughter of former Taoiseach Bertie Ahern, and they have twin boys and a daughter.
He has filled in for him on his morning radio slot and now he is eyeing up a presenting role on a weekend entertainment show like the Late Late.
But ex-Westlife star Nicky Byrne has assured fans of Ryan Tubridy that he is not trying to replace the Dublin presenter.
The dad-of-two received rave reviews when he took over Tubridy’s 2fm slot earlier this summer, and is hoping to add to his presenting credentials when he fronts music show The Hit alongside Aidan Power later this month.
“I felt bad because it’s almost like I was trying to muscle in on Ryan’s slot, which isn’t my intention,” explained the singer-turned-presenter.
“He does an amazing show and there is plenty of room for everybody.”
But the 34-year-old admits that hosting a night-time entertainment show would be his dream job. “I do look at Friday, Saturday and Sunday night TV slots in Ireland and one day hope that would be the chance for me to host an entertainment show,” Nicky told this week’s RTE Guide.
Nicky and Aidan will take the helm of The Hit, a TV music competition that gives fledgling songwriters a chance to have chart success, when it opens in Dublin’s O2 next Friday, July 26.
It is a busy time for the dad to twins Rocco and Jay (6), as wife Georgina is expecting the couple’s third child at Halloween.
A hectic personal and work life means Nicky has seen little or nothing of his fellow Westlife crooners since they parted ways last June.
“We all wish each other the very best. I probably keep in touch with Shane (Filan) the most, but certainly a few texts or emails will come through every few months.”
RADIO bosses at RTE are scrambling to sign up former Westlife star Nicky Byrne to a regular spot.
The chatty singer impressed chiefs after filling in for Ryan Tubridy on 2FM yesterday morning and is set to spend more time on the airwaves in future.
Father-of-two Nicky recently landed a gig presenting TV show The Hit which begins filming next week.
And now the radio department is interested in hearing more of the Dubliner on the station.
An insider revealed: “Nicky went down a storm — he’s a natural on radio and has a real way with people.
“He’s being lined up for more work on a more regular basis on 2FM and really impressed everyone in there.
“He wouldn’t be filling in for Ryan Tubridy if they didn’t rate him highly — it’s the most listened to show on the station.” Byrne made his way through two hours of live radio yesterday without a hitch.
And Nicky, 34, admitted that taking over the slot for one morning was something that made his mammy very proud.
Speaking ahead of the show he said: “I really didn’t have to be asked twice when 2FM approached me to fill in for Ryan Tubridy.
“It’s two hours that I’ll cherish and I’m willing to give it my best shot to keep listeners entertained.”
He continued: “Also my mam will be very proud I’m taking over the ‘big one’ even if its just for one day!
“It’s massive boots to fill as Ryan is one of our best broadcasters and I’m really looking forward to the challenge.”
Nicky, who is married to Georgina, and father to twins Rocco and Jay, is set to become a dad again this year.
The star was greeted with packages of baby goodies as he arrived at 2FM for the show early yesterday morning.
FORMER Westlife star Nicky Byrne is back in the studio.
But instead of recording boyband ballads, he will be filling in for 2fm’s Ryan Tubridy. Nicky will front Ryan’s radio show on May 29 when the big man celebrates his 40th birthday.
2fm had planned to announce the news early next week, but their plans were dashed when outspoken music mogul Louis Walsh spilled the beans live on air.
Louis was appearing on Colm Hayes’ radio show to talk about his own upcoming stint on the station. Louis will host a special three-hour ‘oldies show’ on the June bank holiday Monday. But before long he started talking about Nicky’s hush-hush gig.
“You know Nicky’s coming? Nicky Byrne, he’s starting here in a few weeks time. You know that?” the X Factor judge asked Colm.
But presenter Colm appeared surprised, saying on air: “Why did you do this? We told you before you came you were not to mention Nicky Byrne.”
“But he’s in Westlife,” Louis replied. “And he’s going to be in for just one day.”
“Colm, your job’s safe,” he said. “Don’t worry, and he’s just doing Ryan’s job for one day.”
Colm told listeners this information “hadn’t been released yet”.
“Well it is now!” Louis shouted. “Nicky Byrne is doing 2fm for Ryan!”
And dad-of-two Nicky said he is delighted: “I really didn’t have to be asked twice when 2fm approached me to fill in on Tubridy,” he said.
“It’s massive boots to fill and I’m really looking forward to the challenge.”
