Bertie’s son-in-law goes back to his humble family roots

HE might have become pop royalty, but singer Nicky Byrne’s family come from an altogether more humble background.

The former Westlife star has traced his roots back to labourers, porters and dock workers.

He was guided through his family history by genealogist Nicola Morris, who has worked on the hit TV series ‘Who Do You Think You Are?’ and ‘The Genealogy Roadshow’, and historian Turtle Bunbury.

Nicky’s father-in-law, Bertie Ahern, was at the History Festival of Ireland in Duckett’s Grove, Co Carlow, to hear the details.

“Nicky’s great-great-grandfather, Charles Callahan, died in 1908 at the age of the 30,” said Ms Morris. “He was a labourer on the docks and was killed when he was hit by a plank.

“The family lived in tenements in Dublin. We were talking about the struggle that his wife, Teresa Swords, would have gone through. Both her parents were deceased and she eventually remarried.”

On the Byrne side of the family, Ms Morris said there were more than 10,000 people in Dublin with the family name in the 1911 Census.

However, she managed to trace his history back to a family in Co Laois.

“I think he was delighted – we helped them to fill in some of the blanks in the story,” she said.

Nicky Byrne: ‘Westlife success down to You Raise Me Up’

Westlife were on the verge of splitting in the mid-2000s – until they agreed to record single You Raise Me Up after years of snubbing the track, according to Nicky Byrne.

The singer admits the four piece didn’t know how to spot a hit, and continually turned down the Secret Garden tune.

The project is Nicky’s first foray into songwriting and the first time he has worked with Cecelia.

Nicky in no hurry to tread boards

He’s out to conquer the world of television, but you’ll be waiting a long time before you see singer-turned-presenter Nicky Byrne acting.

The father of two told The Diary that he “doesn’t want to chase a dream” at this stage in his life.

“I did a brief acting course in New York years ago, but for me it’s a confidence thing,” he said.

Nicky has become the new co-host of RTÉ six-part series The Hit, alongside Aidan Power, which will air next month.

“This is exactly where I want to be right now, and the fact that it’s presenting and music combined is perfect,” said Nicky.

Music-based formats seem to be ruling the roost in RTÉ at the moment, with Liam McKenna currently filming Music Inc for RTÉ Two, which is due in the autumn.

“We’ve been filming for a few months now and it’s going pretty well. The show is a little bit like The Apprentice, but for this industry,” Liam said.

“We’ve taken 10 transition-year students and they’re all competing to win a job working with me on tour. They’re set a challenge each week by a celebrity and each week one is eliminated.”

So far they have designed costumes for Tulisa, performed a remix of The Saturdays and shot a video for the X Factor finalists.

Former Westlife star Nicky Byrne, who recently sat in for Ryan Tubridy on his morning RTÉ 2fm show, has said that he would love to present more radio.

When asked if he would present a regular show on 2fm if he was offered a slot, he said: “Who knows. It’s a huge commitment. I’ve met people in the UK and I’m waiting on things to come off and TV is where I’d love to be both here and across the water.

“I always want to live here but it would be silly of me to ignore the fact that Westlife have a fan base in the UK as well but…if they [2fm] were serious about it, it would be hard not to listen to that option and that opportunity to be honest.”
